I always dreamed of owning a construction company, but I knew that to own and operate a real construction company, I needed to work for larger companies to learn as much as possible before going off on my own. I spent approximately 10 years in the building trades, working my way up from building foundations to framing to lead carpenter and finally project superintendent for a large commercial construction company. I felt the need to know every trade from start to finish on a building, and not just know but understand how each trade is done. This deep understanding allows me to bid jobs with confidence, knowing I won’t be burdening our clients with change orders from our mistakes!

One thing that always bothered me about construction was that in almost every company I worked for, there were arrogant project managers, superintendents, and office teams that treated the field workers poorly. I can recall several times receiving custom hoodies, hats, and coffee mugs for being “the boss” – I would never keep any of that and instead gave it all to my field team. The guys who pour the foundation, paint the walls, install the floors, and beyond are the ones who help make the magic happen! What most companies don’t understand is that being a real leader isn’t about being the “boss” or the person who runs the show – it’s about building a team that cares about everyone.
